Chapter 2: Bloody Back to School

“Did you know the victim, officer?” you ask.

Her eyes jump to you, a little panicked. Not expecting the question, Wishwell turns to look at her, his eyebrow raised. A moment passes you.

“He asked you a question, Officer Taylor,” Wishwell pressed. Taylor’s eyes jumped to him, then back to you.

“He’s my brother-in-law,” she answered hurriedly. “My sister’s husband.” A tear forms in her eye. “We only saw him a few days ago for dinner.”

You look at the body, then back at her.

“Do back to the precinct, Ellie,” Wishwell ordered. “Get someone else to cover your shift. We’ll talk to you once we get back.” After a moment’s hesitation, Taylor nodded gently and turned, exiting your line of sight. Wishwell then turns to you. “Nice work, Bell,” he says. “Now, c’mon, let's sort the scene out so we can let the kids get back to their classes.”

“Actually, Inspector,” you say, not realising the words were escaping. Wishwell snapped to you. “I thought I’d go question her now, while the scene is fresh.” You paused to see his reaction. He doesn’t. “Might make her talk quicker.”

Wishwell shrugged. “Do what you think is best, Bell,” he says gruffly. “I like crime scenes quiet anyway.”

You turn and leave, following Officer Taylor to the school’s entrance.
