Chapter 1: Pancakes and Keys

You burst through the doors of the precinct as the clock strikes 9:05. Cursing yourself, you dash past Johnny at the reception desk and into the ‘Inspector Bullpen’, named by the large sign about its doors. Running through the doors, you come face to face with the one person you didn’t want to.

Before you stood Detective Inspector William Wishwell, the man with the highest arrest rate in history. His chiselled jaw was clenched as he glowered at you, his eyes darting to the wall clock for a second.

 

“DI Bell,” he said. “You're late.”

 

“Y…Yes, s…sir,” you stammer. “Sorry, I got—”

 

“Do you need another lesson in punctuality?”

 

“No, I don’t—”

 

“Then explain.”

 

You hold your breath for a moment as you consider your options. Lying would be a challenging endeavour, but impressing him is important. As a man with a lot of influence on case distribution, getting in his eyeline was paramount.
