Chapter 3: Suspicious Suspects

“Actually, Inspector,” you say. “Can I head back to the school quickly? I have a few more questions for Mr Argon.”

Wishwell narrows his eyes at you. “Very well, Bell,” he says. “I’ll tag along. I'm interested to know where your mind is going.” Grinning, you grab your coat and start towards the Bullpen’s exit, Wishwell on your heel.

Less than an hour later, you arrive outside St Patricks Primary School. Children are running around the playground, oblivious to the events of that morning. Standing in the middle of the playground, surrounded by a small group of children was Owen Odwin. Hastily, you approach him.

Upon seeing you, his eyes widen and he ushers the kids away. “Inspectors,” he says with a quiver and a false smile. “What are you doing back so soon?”

“You and Mr Rodwell had a good relationship,” you say. “Friends for over a decade, it seems.”

Owen glances between the two of you. “Yeah, we went way back.”

“So when he told you that he was struggling to find work, you thought you’d help?”

He scoffs and glances around himself. “No, what do you—”

“We have the records, Mr Odwin,” Wishwell cuts in. “So don’t lie again or I’ll take you in myself.”

Owen’s mouth flapped for a moment, his distress interrupted by a young boy tapping his leg.

“MR ODWIN!” the boy cries, a grin plastered across his face. Owen turned to him. “Connie won't let me play!”

“Oh, Jack,” Owen sighs. “Why don’t you go find Ms Davidson. I've got to speak to these chaps about a few things.” With an exaggerated frown, the boy runs off and Owen turns his attention back to you. “Look, Inspectors,” he says quietly. “Josh is in his office at the moment, go talk to him. I didn’t kill Alfie, he’s my best mate.” He straightens himself. “I would never hurt him like that.”

You and Wishwell share and glance before thanking the man and turning away, heading towards Josh’s office.
