Chapter 1: Pancakes and Keys

Hurriedly, you pull the suit on, grabbing your phone from your nightstand, you hurtle your way down the stairs, fumbling with the key rack as you try and pluck your car keys from it.

“Merlin!” you hear Tara call. “What on earth are you doing?”

Your mind flashes for a response.

“What does it look like, Tara!” you shout. “I'm going to be late!”

“There’s no need to shout, Merlin,” Tara shouts back. “I'm right here.” You roll your eyes at her. Your interaction has distracted you from your search. You have lost place of your keys once again. “You’re not even having breakfast?” she continues.

“I can't,” you say. “The inspector doesn’t like lateness.”

“You’ve been there long enough, surely you can be late once.”

“I’d still rather not.” Your hand clutches over your car’s keys. Turning to Tara, you smile and lean forward, kissing her cheek. “Sorry, my love,” you say hurriedly, “but I’d rather not risk it.” Tara smiles as you pull away.

“Just as long as you're home for dinner,” she says. You nod and grin as you leave the house, strutting to your car. Once you open the door, you start the car and drive off down the road, securing yourself with the seatbelt as you go.
