Chapter 3: Suspicious Suspects

“Could we speak to you alone, Barbara?” you ask her.

The now timid woman nods ever so slightly and stands, guiding you and Wishwell into the kitchen, Harry’s cold glare following you as you exited the living room. You close the door behind you and turn back to her.

“Where were you this morning, Mrs Rune,” you ask. Barbara stares at you in shock. “I know, I don’t mean to accuse, but I have to ask.”

“I…um…” she starts. “I dropped Jack off and got talking to a couple of mums outside the gates.” She looks at Wishwell. “We have this book-slash-yoga group together. We were planning a meet-up for next week.”

“We’ll have to verify,” Wishwell says.

Barbara nods. “Of course, yeah.” She begins to step past you. “I’ll go get their addresses.” She opens the door and stops. “Harry!” she calls. You whip your head around to see Harry stuffing Jack into a car and jumping into the driver’s seat. Pushing past Barbara, you and Wishwell rush after him but the car pulls away before you can reach it and out of your eyeline before you reach your car.

Beside you, Wishwell hits the car. “Damn it!” he shouts.

Breathing heavily, you spin and look back at Barbara. She has collapsed to the floor, sobbing, her tears staining the driveway.

And your heart drops a thousand feet.
